The item shown in the image is a James Madison Indian Peace Medal, dated 1809. These medals were presented to Native American leaders as diplomatic gifts to symbolize peace and friendship between the United States and sovereign Nations.
The obverse (front) of the medal displays a bust of James Madison facing left, with the legend "JAMES MADISON PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. A.D. 1809" around his head.
The reverse (back) typically features two hands shaking below a peace pipe and tomahawk, with the legend "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP".
Original medals were often made of silver and were sometimes pierced so recipients could wear them around their necks.
The medal in the image appears to be a bronze restrike or replica, which were produced by the U.S. Mint starting in the 1840s and later.
The original medals were designed by John Reich.
