The Bank of the United States, although officially private, was the first central bank to issue currency within the United States. It was intended to handle government deposits and disbursements and to facilitate commerce.

Alexander Hamilton, as first Secretary of the Treasury, founded the Bank of the United States in 1791 establishing a system of badly-needed credit for the government. This bank, began issuing private currencies to facilitate borrowing and lending throughout the early 1800’s.
